If you want to learn to speed read you can. It does not need to be costly, but you'll need to put aside plenty of time to perfect the skills you learn.
When a kid learns to read they begin by recognising the letters and then they make sounds and words with these. From this stage they then learn to read the sentences by moving their eyes across the piece of paper from left to right. If you want to speed read you have to break this practice and learn a new method of reading.
To successfully learn to speed read you must be able to grab an entire line and process it at once. This sounds difficult, but with practice it can become second nature. If you are driving behind a lorry and you see the words 'long vehicle' on the back of it, you don't actually read them you recognise them. That is a very fundamental form of what you're about to learn to do.
There're various techniques which you have to master. Firstly you'll need to find a few text to practice with. Before you do anything else you'll need a pencil, ruler and white piece of paper.
Now draw a line down the middle of the text in pencil. That is the line our eye should follow down the page. As you're training your brain to absorb the text as lines not words, you want to be able to focus the mind on one line at a time.
Place your blank piece of paper over the text so only the top line is showing. Now focus on the pencil line you have drawn. If you are lucky you may have read one word, the word which your line goes through. Suppose that you've just absorbed the whole of the understanding of that line of text. Fantastic isn't it. This is the way a lot of people now read.
There are various courses available on ways to speed read, some are great, but others may teach you nothing. The greatest courses will be ones that will go through the ways with you. When you learn to speed read the course is sometimes as good as the people attending. If the course is targeted at people who're driven and keen to learn then the lecturer will be keen to teach them. If it's an introductory course you may find that at the finishing your knowledge of the skills is barely improved at all.
A helpful approach to choose the greatest course to learn to speed read is to look at who the marketing is targeting. It's also a good idea to select a course which offers a few pre course preparation. This may only be reading some background on the lecturers or even doing some tests to set up your current reading speed. The critical thing is that lots of people are put off by having to work, so if the course needs work up front it'll be a technique to discard those who are not actually interested in learning.
